A Greener Apple… For a Greener World
Updated September 7, 2011
Apple is undoubtedly a leader in bringing high-quality products to people of mixed generations to use. They have been featured in numerous websites for all their products and the word "success" is all over Apple's name.
But even this tech giant has its fair share of criticisms. For one, Apple has been condemned by a lot of environmental groups and organizations for not being a model for a greener purpose. Claims that Apple has a lot of harmful chemicals in their products scared users and thus, these customers were encouraged to buy items from other companies that were labeled as "green companies".
"With great power comes great responsibility"
Eco-groups protested that Apple must not only be an industry-leader in providing the world with iDevices. They say that Apple should be more aggressive in eliminating chemicals in the process of manufacturing their products and recycling their own wastes.
Because of this, Apple has made its move to reinvent their processes and have a shift in terms of their manufacturing methods. Therefore, they have conducted investigations on how to do it. As a result, they have begun the change for a greener Apple.
A lot of Apple's practices have been revised just to accomplish their newfound goals. They have also learned that they are already doing some of the needed steps for "greening" their gadgets. They discovered that the best way to serve their customers, stakeholders and the environment is to change their policy about toxic chemicals found in their devices.
That is why they launched a more aggressive campaign in recycling their old products and properly deal with their wastes. They have also removed these toxic chemicals and compounds to help in the drive for a greener and healthier planet.
According to Apple, these are all their removed toxic chemicals in their manufacture process:
? Lead
Apple completely eliminated the use of CRTs in mid-2006.
? Cadmium, Hexavalent Chromium and Decabromodiphenyl Ether
Apple products met both the spirit and letter of the RoHS restrictions on cadmium, hexavalent chromium and brominated flame retardants years before RoHS went into effect.
? Arsenic and Mercury
Apple plans to completely eliminate the use of arsenic in all of its displays by the end of 2008.
Apple plans to reduce and eventually eliminate the use of mercury by transitioning to LED backlighting for all displays when technically and economically feasible.
? Polyvinyl Chloride
Apple plans to completely eliminate the use of PVC and BFRs in its products by the end of 2008.
? Brominated flame retardants
In reality, Apple is ahead of all of these companies in eliminating toxic chemicals from its products.
These chemicals are proven toxic and deleterious for the environment and all living things inhabiting it. A lot of research found that these unwanted chemicals are the agents of deterioration for water, air, and land reserves.
If not eliminated properly, these toxic and deadly chemicals will pollute the last remaining resources of the planet that will result in total destruction.
A Greener Apple
Apple promises to continue their green operations and they have vowed to the goal of becoming a greener Apple. This will not only be their first and last attempt to go for what is right for the environment. They have sworn to openly discuss and report about updates in their efforts and accomplishments at least on an annual basis.
The company was reported to discuss other environmental concerns in their circle, such as energy efficiency, as well as calculating and lessening the carbon footprint of their products. They promised to share interesting information about this on a regular basis.
The Aftermath
Due to this noble move, Apple has been raised by sites like TreeHugger.com to be one of the leading green companies which consumers must buy gadgets from. This is for their efforts to remove toxic materials and provide an avenue for recycling e-wastes.
In addition, sites like cashforiPhones.com and cashforiPads.com have launched all-out buyback programs and trade ins for used iPhones and iPads so there will be easier and simpler means of getting rid of unused and obsolete devices.
These companies have supported Apple for years now in their effort to recycle e-wastes in a manner that is not harmful to the environment. They buy Apple devices and give cash in return so the handing of unwanted and unused electronic gadgets becomes a place to gain something valuable.
